This formation marks the end of the predominantly marly-clayey sedimentation within the sedimentary basin (Scaglia Variegata). From the lithological point of view, the Scaglia Cinerea is represented by marly limestone and calcareous marl. This formation has been the subject of numerous biostratigraphic, lithostratigraphic, geochronological, and chemical studies, which led to the identification of the “Massignano type section" in the province of Ancona, the most representative of the Eocene-Oligocene limit.
