Variegated Scale
With the deposition of the formation of the Scaglia Variegata we pass from a predominantly calcareous sedimentation, which had affected the underlying formations of the White and Red Scaglia, to a predominantly clayey one with the formation of predominantly marly and clayey layers (marl, rock consisting of a mix of calcium carbonate and clay minerals). The presence of clays makes this formation practically impermeable, giving rise to landscapes whose morphology tends to move further and further away from that of calcareous soils, characterized by harsh morphologies and rocky walls, to get closer to the softer and more rounded ones of clayey soils.
